In what has to be the most interesting application of the Buffon needle problem I’ve seen, you can estimate the value of Pi by throwing frozen hot dogs at a grid of masking tape. I like this warning: “Resist the temptation to use bananas. Not only are they not really straight, but they really won’t last more than 50 throws before creating a big mess. Really.”
