Tech Savvy Girls was a program offered in the state of Vermont with the intent of giving girls experience with working with technology and providing them with female role models in the IT world. I learned from this article at Infinite Thinking Machine today that Tech Savvy Girls, despite having their funding in Vermont run out, is alive and well. And they have a new wiki to prove it. Go check it out.
Programs like this serve a valuable role that traditional schools, whose computer science offerings tend to be woefully inadequate, simply can’t fill. With the growing disparity between girls and boys getting meaningful exposure to real computer science prior to college, groups like TSG will become more and more important. (I’m especially sensitive to this issue as the dad of two young girls who I really hope become tech savvy themselves at an early age.)
