Shooting at Virginia Tech

Here’s the CNN story. When I first read the headline this morning, it was one person killed. Now it’s twenty dead. Twenty.

The VT website is reporting that the gunman has died, although CNN and others are reporting two shooters.

The CNN report also says that VT students were blogging all this while they were in lockdown in their classrooms; no luck finding any of these blogs on Technorati a moment ago.

Simply horrific. I’ll post updates as I get them.

Update: Fox News is saying 22 dead, including one of the gunmen.

Update 2: News sources are confirming that there was just one gunman, who has been killed. Will we ever know the motive? Off to class.

Update 3: I’m back from my 1:20-3:10 class. It’s now 32 dead, 28 wounded. Good Lord. CNN and MSNBC have not updated that much, but Hot Air has a huge roundup, including video. Can this be right?

Update: According to WaPo, this is now the deadliest shooting spree of any kind, on campus or off, in American history. And if Wikipedia is right, it’s already the third worst in modern world history.

Good Lord. And based on these eyewitness accounts, there was a serious breakdown in communication:

It really wasn’t organized. Almost everyone else just left, and while the kids were running out, people said, “Come back, come back.”

“The only reason we knew was because someone got a text message…No one was there saying, “This is what’s going on.”

Communication from college? I checked my e-mail about 8:30…I went to my class as I usually would. By 8:30 no one was notified that something had happened at 7. We went onto a dangerous campus not knowing…

If there was a serious situation unfolding at 7:00 AM involving a gunman loose on campus, and students were allowed to go to classes anyway and were not even made aware of the situation, then somebody in the hierarchy at VT needs to account for this.

The phone lines are overwhelmed currently, so no calls can be made.

    Update:
Rumor has it the first shooting took place at 7am. It took them 3 hours to shut down campus since then? I went to class at 9. Wtf.

Bruce Harper, the Virginia Tech webmaster, flipped on his Pro-95 scanner during the unfolding shooting tragedy in Blacksburg this morning. A few hours later, he emailed this inside account of how multiple police agencies responded to the crisis to a DC-area scanner enthusiasts group. We’re copying it verbatim below (email addresses have been redacted).
