Google Reader issues

Two of my last three posts have shown up in Google Reader being completely illegible. For some reason some of the text is being bunched up on the left side of the post. I don’t know why it’s doing this, and I don’t know if I can go back and re-post and have it be fixed. This might be happening because I drafted those two articles using a text editor and then cut-and-pasted into the editor, and although I can’t see why that should be a problem,’s editor is not well-known for its robustness. Anyhow, hopefully this post (being written entirely inside the editor) will come through OK. If it does, and you subscribe to my feed using Google Reader and couldn’t read my two posts, please just click through the Google Reader feeds to the main articles. They do show up fine on the main blog site.

For everybody, I’ll be putting up some test posts to see if my using a text editor is the problem, and how I might fix it. Thanks for your patience.

UPDATE: Based on the results of the test posts, it looks like my guess above is correct. Must be something about the line breaks not translating properly. Sorry again for the confusion.

Welcome, and an issue about permalinks

Welcome to all of you who are migrating to this new version of Casting Out Nines along with me. Please take a look around and let me know what you like, what you don’t like, and what you’d like changed.

There is one issue to point out having to do with permalinks which point back to previously-published articles. Currently they, er, don’t work. The short version is that the links to past articles all take you back to the old version of the blog, and even then they might not get you where you want. So in the meanwhile, if you are trying to find an old article, use the Search box.

Now click for the longer version.

Possible comment problem

Update: I’ve deactivated the plugin, so now you can leave comments (and you don’t have to do any math!). But I’ll keep trying to figure out how to get the math part of it working again — that plugin has been really effective in stemming the tide of comment spam around here.

A reader just emailed me to let me know that there’s some kind of issue with the commenting right now. The math comment spam plugin blank (where you put the answer to the small arithmetic problem) is not appearing in the comment form, but apparently if you try to leave a comment anyway it tells you have to go back and fill in the blank (which is not there to begin with). It’s too late in the evening right now for me to do anything with that, but I will try and look at it tomorrow. For now, try commenting; if it goes through, then great, but if it doesn’t, email me your comment (castingout9s [at] gmail [dot] com) and I’ll hold on to it under the commenting is fully operational again.

Comments are back

The genius of Justin Baeder, proprietor of WebbleYou which hosts this blog, managed to fix the comment table without destroying it. So comments work again AND none of them got lost.

Bye-bye comments

The cause of the database error that I mentioned earlier was, unfortunately, caused by a corrupted database. It appears there’s no way to fix it other than to eliminate the entire comments table. So I hope you’re not attached to any comment in particular you’ve ever made here, because at some point today they will be all gone.

UPDATED: Update on browser crash problems

Update: I think it’s fixed now. I removed the coComment box that appeared at the bottom of the sidebar, and now things load fine in IE 6.0. I’ve been running that coComment box there for a while now, but they recently did a major upgrade and something entailed in that upgrade was causing the problem. Qumana is absolved, and thank goodness, because I’m really coming to like the software (and the fact that the developers actually respond in person to user issues).

But please do report any other wonky browser behavior to me, and I’ll try to do what I can. Thanks for your patience!

The earlier parts of this post are below the fold:

Pardon the interruption

Sorry for the light blogging, but

  • the internet card in my laptop has died, which means I have to plug in the Wi-fi card (yes, an external card — not internal, which puts a lower bound on the age of my machine) to connect to the web;
  • my Linux distribution can’t figure out how to use the Wi-Fi card;
  • So I have to use Window$ for everything now;
  • And my RSS reader with all the blogs I usually read and post about is over on the Linux side. Therefore I’ve had a stoppage in the raw material (= stuff from other people’s blogs) that I usually write about.

On the bright side, this has given me a chance to make a major push for the Mac laptop as an upgrade. As in: Sure, you can spend the money to fix the card in my laptop, which is going to be upgraded in 3 months anyway, or we can just go ahead and get what I am asking for!
